Velvet Saddle Pads

Velvet saddle pads bring a depth of colour and a softness that technical fabrics rarely match. Every pad in this collection is cut from dense velour with an anatomical fit, shaped to follow the line of the horse's back so it sits close and stays steady under the saddle through a full session. Honeycomb quilting gives each pad its structure, helping it hold a crisp outline through regular and intensive training, while the soft pile helps distribute weight evenly and relieve pressure.

The collection covers both disciplines. Velvet jumping saddle pads are shaped for close-contact saddles, while the dressage cuts carry a longer, straighter drop to suit larger flaps. Each model is finished with a decorative trim of 6 mm and 3 mm cords running around the perimeter — and on the crystal versions, a line of clear crystals with a metal element at the centre adds a measured touch of sparkle for competition days. Colour options range from quiet black, grey and navy to richer chocolate, burgundy and emerald tones, so there is a pad to match a minimal monochrome turnout as well as a bolder show-day look.

What sets Valerie Equestrian velvet pads apart

Velvet saddle pads are now made by several brands, so it helps to know what to compare. Four things define ours: a dense, low-pile velour that keeps its depth of colour after washing rather than flattening; a double cord trim (6 mm and 3 mm) around the whole edge, with the crystal versions carrying a line of clear crystals and a central metal element set into the trim, away from the saddle contact area; honeycomb quilting that holds the pad's outline through daily work; and a matching knitted ear bonnet with velvet ears in the same shade, so a complete set comes from one place. All pads are full size for horses, in jumping and dressage cuts.

Despite the luxurious surface, these are working pads. The velour is easy to care for: a gentle hand wash keeps the pile soft, and the fabric dries quickly and keeps its neat appearance from ride to ride. Shipping is free on every order. Orders to the United States ship Delivered Duty Paid, and for the EU, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Mexico import duties and taxes are prepaid — nothing to pay on delivery.

Frequently asked questions

How do I wash a velvet saddle pad?

Gently, by hand. Shake off dust and hair, hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, rinse and air dry away from direct heat — avoid machine washing and tumble drying, which can crush the pile. Our step-by-step guide, how to wash a velvet saddle pad, walks through the full routine.

What is the difference between a jumping and a dressage cut?

The shape. A jumping pad is cut to follow the forward flap of a close-contact saddle, while a dressage pad has a longer, straighter drop to sit neatly under a dressage saddle's longer flap. Choose the cut that matches your saddle, not the discipline you ride most often.

How do these compare with other velvet saddle pads?

Compare four things: pile density (a dense, low pile wears and washes better than a long, loose one), the trim (ours is a double cord with optional crystals set into the edge, not glued onto the surface), the quilting (honeycomb holds its shape better than flat quilting) and whether a matching ear bonnet exists in the same shade. The velvet saddle pads guide goes through each point.

Do the crystals withstand daily riding?

The crystals are set into the cord trim along the pad's edge, away from the saddle contact area, so normal riding does not put pressure on them. Treat them kindly when cleaning — hand wash gently rather than scrubbing the trim — and they will keep their sparkle season after season.

Can I use a velvet pad for everyday schooling?

Yes. The honeycomb quilting is designed to hold its shape through frequent work, and the quick-drying velour recovers easily between rides. Many riders keep a darker shade for daily schooling and reserve a crystal model for shows.
